The two most important things to consider when buying your next home are your needs and your wants. Obviously these two things can make a huge difference when looking for your next home to buy.
It’s always really easy to figure out what you need from your home (we’ve given you a list of things to consider). Once you have your basics, your “must-haves” in place, then you can start adding your “wants” or as we like to call it, your wish list.
Things to Consider When Deciding What You Need
- General price range of the home.
- Approximate size of the home.
- General location, area, or subdivision.
- Number of bedrooms you need. (Don’t forget to include offices or guest rooms)
- Number of bathrooms you need.
- Style and layout of the home.
- School requirements or districts.
Understanding What You Want In Your Next Home.
Now that you have decided upon your basics, let’s get started on that Wish List. Begin by taking a look at your current home. What features do you like about your home? List out everything you like about your home or even homes that you have visited.
Now make a list of what you don’t like about your home or homes that you have visited. More than likely you will dislike the same features in your new home that you didn’t like in your current home. Creating a comparison chart and understanding what you don’t like about your home and why you don’t like these features will help you in making the right decision in buying a new home that you will love.
If you’re buying a house with someone else, this type of comparison chart will help you both understand each other’s wants and have a better understanding of why they want it. A ranking list will help both of you come together as a team and possibly eliminate any disagreements that may come down the road when looking for your future home. Make sure to take the time to learn about why both of you want the things that you want in your new home, and understand each other’s priorities.
Also, creating a ranking list of what you want will help you eliminate items due to price constraints. Remember buying a house can be stressful. You want to try to figure out what features are important and are a high priority to have in your new home. By doing this, it will hopefully help cut down on the amount of stress you will face.
